Travis County judge charged with DWI

Associated Press

AUSTIN - A Travis County judge who earlier admitted a problem with alcohol faces up to six months in jail and a $2,000 fine after being charged with driving while intoxicated.
The charge comes a little more than two years after County Court-at-Law Judge Wilfred Aguilar, 50, was cited for public intoxication. A grand jury declined to indict him in the November 1996 case, but Aguilar pleaded no contest and paid a fine of about $100.
Aguilar said during his re-election bid last year he had a problem with alcohol. Referring to the 1996 case he said, "This will not happen again."
The judge did not report to work Monday or Tuesday, and other judges were asked to hear his cases, courthouse officials said.
Aguilar was arrested at about 2 a.m. Sunday after Department of Public Safety Trooper Charles Haight noticed a car driving slowly behind his patrol car.
The trooper said he pulled the car over because the rear tires looked bald, and Aguilar did not stop immediately when signaled to do so.
